About the Mindfulness Center of Asheville

What is Mindfulness?

When we are mindful, our attention is fully in the present moment. We are aware of our senses, our thoughts, our feelings. A mindfulness practice is a tool for creating lives in alignment with our values, our goals and our integrity.

Mindfulness takes us out of automatic pilot. In doing so, we see the default patterns of thought and behavior that tend to run our lives when we are not paying full attention. From there, we can understand and change these patterns, leading to joyful engagement in daily living

The practice of mindfulness is a foundation for:

• clearly seeing what is and what needs to be done in this moment
• acting from a place of compassion
• communicating  clearly and honestly
• finding equanimity and balance
• increasing energy and focus
• discovering calm in the center of the storm

Why a Mindfulness Center? Why teach it?

Humans are experiencing an unprecedented level of stress brought about in part by the pace of change and demands of modern society. “I can’t keep up” and “there’s no time” are common complaints.

When we are overwhelmed and overworked, we lack the space within our own lives to find the clarity of purpose we are seeking. Mindfulness teaches us how  to make deliberate choices, structuring our lives in order to find space, clarity and peace of mind in the modern world.

How does mindfulness help?

A growing body of research indicates that daily meditation practice leads to measurable functional changes  in the brain increasing positive moods, improving physical and emotional health and developing the capacity to cope with stressors of all types.

When we live mindfully, the quality of our lives improve through:

• clear communication in personal relationships and at work
• focused movement towards personal and professional goals
• steadiness in the face of life’s challenges

How can the Mindfulness Center help?

Our work at the Mindfulness Center includes instruction in mindfulness techniques, individual psychotherapy, personal coaching and group skills development. Put simply, we give you the skills to live a deliberate, mindful and joyful life.

By providing a setting and a format in which this can occur, we help you discover the energy that comes from making your own path in life and pursuing it with deliberate focus amidst the multiple distractions and interruptions of 21st century living.

Testimonial:
“For me, the difference between mindfulness training versus traditional therapy is the emphasis on locating one's core, a totally  different process than simply taming one's ego. In both the group  training and individual therapy sessions, Susan Grant is consistent  in skillfully applying mindfulness techniques to each new situation. Her emphasis on balancing the cognitive as well as heart-centered components of Mindfulness Training is truly unique and life- affirming. It has allowed me to stay more in balance, to consciously take responsibility for my actions, and to feel more joy in my life.” - Group participant
